What is the cheapest time of year to go to Bora Bora?

The cheapest time of year to go is in the rainy season so between November and April, peaking between December and March.

During this time, not only the temperatures are at their highest, but also the humidity due to the many rainfalls. However, the high temperatures are not significantly higher than the rest of the year, while in November to April the average is 82°F (28°C), and between May and October, the average is 79°F (26°C). The water temperatures of the clear turquoise ocean are in the same range.

What makes this period more uncomfortable and therefore cheaper is the high humidity. During the rainy season, humidity rises to an average of 60%, peaking in mid-March at over 70%. This weather also attracts a lot of insects.

If the insects and humidity don’t bother you, you can get a bargain during the rainy season on hotel and resort prices.

Wet Season means low Season - December to March

Rainy season also means it’s not peak season, so hotels are less crowded and activities can be experienced in smaller, more intimate groups.

Low season is also a great time to visit Bora Bora if you’re on a budget.

However, some businesses close during this time or have reduced hours, so it’s best to check in advance whether your preferred activities will be available.

Shoulder Season - April & November

If you prefer to enjoy better weather and still want to save a little on resort prices compared to the high season, the shoulder season is just right for you. Also, the crowds have not arrived yet or are already leaving, so you can still enjoy the island mostly relaxed. The average temperature is around 82°F (27°C)

There are still rainy periods followed by increased humidity, but the showers and thus the humidity quickly pass, leaving a beautiful blue sky.

Due to the lack of wind, the two shoulder season months are especially popular for scuba diving, as the clear calm waters are perfect for exploring the underwater world with blacktip reef sharks, whales, and other fish.

Especially for non-divers, we can recommend the Jet Ski, Lunch & Shark/ Ray Safari*. The 6-hour excursion is divided into several sections: There is lunch in a small group and a 2-hour jet ski trip in which you can marvel at the sharks, sting rays, and many breathtakingly colorful fish through the clear turquoise water. In the end, you can even swim with them.

Peak Season - May to October

The best time to visit Bora Bora to enjoy good weather is between May and October. The South Pacific island is located in the southern hemisphere, which means that winter in Bora Bora is in the summer months of the northern hemisphere (America, Europe, and Asia). Therefore, the humidity in the high season, which is also the dry season, is lower than in the shoulder seasons or rainy season.

This period is also the most expensive, that’s why should book well in advance, to save a few bucks. We gathered also some tips for you to get the most affordable overwater bungalow vacation.

During high season you also have the advantage that the average temperature is a pleasant 80°F (26.5°C).

In the dry season, there is also the windiest weather, so the conditions for sailing* are wonderful.

Bora Bora Weather By Month

Let’s dive into the different conditions you can expect during the year in more detail:

January

January is the best time to visit Bora Bora if you’re looking for some peace and quiet. Since it’s the month with the most wet days, makes it the month with the least amount of tourists. This means you can get the best deals for amazing resorts if you stay in January. The average temperature is around 82°F (28°C)

February

The humidity increases in February because the precipitation phases are shorter and thus have more time to dry and transform into humidity. The high humidity attracts many insects, which along with the high humidity makes the month one of the most uncomfortable months with temperatures at 82°F(28°C).

March

The weather begins to dry out in March, although there is still a chance of showers. The humidity decreases slightly and the average temperature is 83°F (28.5°C).

April - Best time to Visit Bora Bora

April is, in our opinion, the best month to visit Bora Bora, because the weather is almost as good as in the high season, but you have the advantage that the resorts are less crowded and the prices are cheaper. Compared to the other shoulder season month of November, April has less average monthly rainfall and fewer rainy days but can reach statistically higher peaks.

Average temperatures are 82°F (28°C) with an average of 9.2 rainy days, which is 1.5 days less than March and less rainfall.

May

May is the beginning of the dry season and also the start of the high season. The temperatures rise slightly to an average of 81°F (27.5°C) and there is very little rainfall. The spectacular event of the Tahiti Pearl Regatta takes place every year in May and one stop where the regatta passes with amazing sailboats is Bora Bora.

June

June is probably the most crowded month due to school vacations in North America and Europe, which leads to many families coming to Bora Bora. The weather becomes drier, but also windier, which worsens the conditions for scuba diving but is ideal for sailing and kiteboarding. The average temperature is around 80°F (27°C) and only 5 rainy days.

July

July is the peak month of the high season, not only because it has the fewest rainy days, but also because of the biggest cultural event in Bora Bora, the Heiva I Bora Bora. The festival is known for its breathtaking music, dance, singing, and sporting events that showcase the wonderful culture of the Polynesian people in French Polynesia in its full beauty. The festival is held in the main square of Vaitape at Place Tu Vavau.

The average temperature drops slightly from the previous month to 79°F (27°C).

August

The weather in August is ideal for outdoor activities on land but the trade winds around this month can create rough seas and choppy conditions. Temperatures still average 27°C (79°F) and humidity is quite low.

September - Second best month

September is in our experience the second-best month to visit Bora Bora. Since you have good weather, clear water, but fewer people compared to the other months of the season.

The temperatures keep dropping in September, with an average of 77°F (25°C). The dry season continues and the winds are still strong.

October

n October the high season ends and with it the reliably dry weather. Temperatures rise, but the number of rainy days also increases from 3.4 days in September to 7.4 days. With temperatures ranging from 77°F (25°C) to 85°F (29°C).

Due to the calmer weather, the water is clearer again and you can discover more of the fantastic underwater world while diving. To experience the finest swimming and snorkeling in Bora Bora, plan your visit between October to April; this is when you will witness an extraordinary natural beauty. Due to the end of the humpback whale season in November, you can already see some of the stunning creatures at the end of the month.

November

November marks the end of the whale season, when you have the last chance to see humpback whales and get close to them. Please do not get too close to disturb these amazing creatures and enjoy the sight from too far away rather than too close.

As November is the other shoulder month, the weather is similar to April, however, the weather here turns from nice to unpleasant contrary to April. Average temperatures are identical to October, but it becomes cloudier, and rainy days increase again by almost 3 days to 10.3 days.

December

December is the month with the second most rainy days. More rainy days has only January. However, December offers the advantage of the Christmas season, which is also celebrated by the inhabitants of Bora Bora. So if you don’t mind the many rainy days, we can only recommend you to spend Christmas in Bora Bora. It is a different celebration than what you are used to in North America or Europe, but also a celebration that will be remembered. Especially the numerous local events to which I was invited by the warm-hearted Maohi people of Bora Bora have remained in my memory.

FAQ

What's the best time to visit Bora Bora for a Honeymoon?

The best time to honeymoon in Bora Bora is definitely the shoulder season, as the island is less crowded and you can immerse yourself in a more intimate atmosphere with your partner.

Moreover, this romantic atmosphere is less likely to be disturbed by pesky insects than if you were to honeymoon in Bora Bora in the low season.  However, weather conditions are still pleasant with average temperatures of 81°F (27°C) and only 8.4 rainy days.

What's the best time to visit Bora Bora for a Wedding?

If you are planning to get married in Bora Bora, the best time to do it is definitely the high season, because the high season is also the dry season. Not everyone wants to be surprised by a downpour in their white wedding dress.

Whether you choose a classic western wedding dress or a traditional Polynesian wedding dress, both types of dresses contain a lot of white. For some, this could ruin the wedding. In high season, you minimize this risk of getting wet during the ceremony.
